The male Red-winged Blackbird is distinctive with his glossy black coat, and red epaulets fringed with yellow. Red-winged blackbirds occur in marshes, swamps, and wet meadows and pastures throughout all of the lower 48 United States, and across southern and western Canada. The male's song, often delivered from an exposed perch, is a musical and emphatic KONK-KA-REEEE. He will vigorously defend his territory against intruders, including larger birds such as crows and hawks. This male was photographed defending his territory at Salyer NWR in North Dakota, USA.
