The male Snow Bunting is distinctive in his sharp black-and-white plumage. The female is duller with dusky streaks on her head. In winter both birds are a drab brownish black above and white below. Snow Buntings breed in the high Arctic regions of Europe, Asia, Alaska, and Canada. In winter they are found throughout southern Canada and the northern US and along the east and west coasts of North America as far north as Newfoundland, Canada in the east, and southern Alaska and the Aleutian Islands in the west. They are often seen in large flocks during winter. This male Snow Bunting in breeding plumage was photographed at the village of Gambell on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska.
