[Caracara cheriway]

[Length 23 in. Wingspan 49 in.]

The Crested Caracara is a resident of brushy grasslands in central and southern Texas, southeastern Arizona, and the remnant prairies of central Florida. It is much more common in the same habitat in Mexico, where it is the national symbol. Caracaras feed both on small animals they capture, and carrion. They are often seen feeding on the ground with vultures. This one was photographed atop a telephone pole in the Kissimmee prairie of central Florida. Photo taken with a Nikkor 300mm f4.5 ED lens on Kodachrome 64 film. (Date: November 1979)
