Although the large, dark, shoe-button eyes are one of this bird's prominent features, The Tufted Titmouse gets its name from its shaggy gray crest. It is a common woodland bird and feeder visitor of deciduous woodlands and wooded suburban areas in the eastern US, where it occurs from the mid-New England states, south through most of Florida, and west to the middle of the plains states. Its loud, ringing "PETER PETER" song belies its small size. Although the male is more vocal, both the male and female sing. This one was photographed near a feeder in central New Jersey.
