Ring-necked Duck
[Aythya collaris]
[Length 17 in. Wingspan 25 in.]
The Ring-necked Duck gets its name from the chestnut collar which appears briefly on the drake's neck during the breeding season.
This is a classic example of a bird being named for a field mark that was seen on a specimen "in the hand".
Although it can be seen faintly here, it is more often not visible "in the field".
This drake Ring-necked Duck was photographed along the entrance road to Land of the Loons Resort, Anglin Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Photo taken with a AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor 200-500mm f5.6 IF-ED lens on a Nikon D7100 camera.
