[Length 25 (Female) to 31 (Male) in. Wingspan 38 (F) to 48 (M) in.]

Although this Muscovy Duck shows all the field marks of a wild bird, it is assumed to be a feral bird descended from domestic stock. It was photographed at a road crossing on the Guadalupe River along Rt. 1340, Hunt, Texas, USA. Photo taken with a Nikkor EDAF 300 f4.0 lens on Kodachrome 200 film. (Date: December 2000)

Ring-necked Duck
[Aythya collaris]

[Length 17 in. Wingspan 25 in.]

The Ring-necked Duck gets its name from the chestnut collar which appears briefly on the drake's neck during the breeding season. This is a classic example of a bird being named for a field mark that was seen on a specimen "in the hand". Although it can be seen faintly here, it is more often not visible "in the field". This drake Ring-necked Duck was photographed along the entrance road to Land of the Loons Resort, Anglin Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada. Photo taken with a AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor 200-500mm f5.6 IF-ED lens on a Nikon D7100 camera. (Date: June 21, 2018)
