Reddish Egret
[Egretta rufescens]
[Length 30 in. Wingspan 46 in.]
Reddish Egrets are uncommon breeders and residents along the southern coasts of the US.
They hunt energetically by dashing about and holding their wings as a canopy or umbrella.
Even at a great distance, this activity allows them to be easily distinguished from the similar Little Blue Heron.
This one, in full hunting "gait", was photographed at Laguna Atascosa NWR, Texas, USA.
Photo taken with a Nikkor 300mm ED f4.5 lens on Kodachrome 64 film.
