Purple Finch - Interior
[Carpodacus purpureus purpureus]

[Length 6 in. Wingspan 10 in.]

The male Purple Finch has a reddish strawberry tint on his head, upper breast, and rump. The lack of crisp streaking below helps to separate the male Purple Finch from the similar male House Finch. The Purple Finch breeds in mixed and coniferous woodlands, and coniferous trees in suburban areas throughout the northeastern US, across most of southern Canada, and down the Pacific coast. It winters throughout the eastern US, and in the Pacific coast states. This male "Interior" Purple Finch was photographed on the ground near a feeder at Tamarac NWR, Minnesota. Photo taken with a Nikkor 300mm EDAF f4.0 lens on Kodachrome 200 film. (Date: May 1992)

American Goldfinch
[Spinus tristis]

[Length 5 in. Wingspan 9 in.]

American Goldfinches are common breeders and feeder visitors throughout much of the US and southern Canada. The males are stunning in their bright yellow-gold and black plumage. The call of the American Goldfinch, usually given in flight, is a repetitive "POTATO-CHIP" or "PER-CHICK-A-REE". It is easy to learn and allows the bird to be identified long before it is seen. This male was photographed at a feeder at Tamarac NWR, Minnesota. Photo taken with a Nikkor 300mm EDAF f4 lens on Kodachrome 200 film. (Date: May 1992)
