The Eared Grebe breeds on lakes and large ponds in the prairies and mountain valleys of the central and western US, and southcentral and southwestern Canada. It winters along the gulf and west coasts of the US. The stunning golden ear tufts of the breeding plumage give the bird its name. This one was photographed in one of the many ponds at Arapaho NWR in northern Colorado. Photo taken with a Nikkor 300mm f4.5 ED lens on Kodachrome 200 film. (Date: May 1992)
