Sooty Grouse (formerly known as Blue Grouse) are residents of the mountains and foothills of the western US and Canada. This "Southern Rockies" Sooty Grouse was photographed at Yovimpa Point in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah after it emerged from underneath one of the cars in the parking lot! Spruce Grouse are residents across much of Canada and Alaska, and the boreal forests of the northern US. They are not easy to deliberately find and are usually simply stumbled upon by accident. Indeed, this one was photographed right along a heavily-travelled woodland trail near Anchorage, Alaska after a day spent fruitlessly looking in much more likely places!
