The Saunder's Gull is one of the rarest gulls in the world. There are only about 4,000 of these birds, all of which breed in central China. They winter along the coasts of China and Japan at a few well-known locations. This Saunder's Gull was photographed on the island of Okinawa, Japan. The Short-billed (Mew) Gull of western North America was once considered conspecific with the Common Gull of Europe and Asia. They breed in northwestern Canada and across much of Alaska. They winter along the west coasts of Canada and the US. Short-billed (Mew) Gulls are distinguished from other gulls by their small, plain, greenish-yellow bill and overall small size, and from the similar Black-legged Kittiwake by the white spots at the tips of their wings. This one was photographed on a rock at the edge of Potter Point Marsh near Anchorage, Alaska, USA. Photo taken with a 300mm f4.5 Nikkor ED lens on Kodachrome 200 film. (Date: May 1988)
