Blue Jay
[Cyanocitta cristata]

[Length 11 in. Wingspan 16 in.]

With its vibrant blue coloring, distinct black and white markings, and jaunty crest, the Blue Jay has the beauty of a porcelain figurine. However, its raucous "JAY JAY" calls and bullying behavior at feeders shatter this elegant image. Blue Jays are the sentinels of the forest, quickly announcing the presence of any predator with their raucous calls. They occur throughout central and eastern Canada and the US, east of the Rocky Mountains, and are often found in areas with Oak Trees. In winter they withdraw from the northern portions of their range. This Blue Jay was photographed near a feeder in central New Jersey. Photo taken with a Nikkor 180mm f2.8 EDAF lens on Kodachrome 200 film. (Date: Mat 1994)
