Black-faced Spoonbill
[Platalea minor]
[Length 29.75 in. Wingspan xx in.]
Black-faced Spoonbills breed along the northern coasts of China and the coasts of North and South Korea.
In winter they move south along the southern coast of China (particularly Hong Kong) and to the Nansei Shoto (southern islands) of Japan.
There are only about 4,000 birds left in the wild, and they are considered an endangered species.
The Black-faced Spoonbill is distinguished from its more abundant cousin, the Eurasian Spoonbill, by the fact that the black of the bill extends up onto the face (hence the name "Black-faced") and around the eyes.
This one (one of three present at this site in February, 1996) was photographed in a pond at the end of the runway at Naha airport on the island of Okinawa, Japan.
Photo taken with a Nikkor 300mm EDAF f4.0 lens on Kodachrome 200 film.
