Great Spotted Woodpecker
[Dendrocopus major]
[Length 9.5 in. Wingspan 14.5 in.]
Great Spotted Woodpeckers are residents across much of northern Europe and Asia.
They are basically a black and white woodpecker, but have bright red undertail coverts, unlike any similar woodpeckers in North America.
This one was photographed approaching a feeder at a nature center near Nemuro on the island of Hokkaido, Japan.
Photo taken with a 300mm f4.0 EDAF lens on Kodachrome 200 film.
