Ruby-crowned Kinglet
[Corthylio calendula]
[Length 4.25 in. Wingspan 7.5 in.]
Other than the Hummingbirds, the Ruby-crowned Kinglet is one of the smallest birds of North America.
Known for their energetic wing flicking and an inquisitive nature, Ruby-crowned Kinglets are common birds of the forests of Canada and the western US, and a common migrant in the eastern US.
The song is also energetic and quite loud for such a small bird.
The males have a thin strip of ruby colored crown feathers that are rarely seen unless the bird is alarmed.
This one was photographed during fall migration in Staten Island, New York, USA.
Photo taken with a Nikkor 500mm f8 mirror lens on Ektachrome 400 film.
