Eastern Meadowlark - Southern Texas
[Sturnella magna hoopesi]

[Length 9.5 in. Wingspan 14 in.]

As the name implies, Eastern Meadowlarks occur throughout the eastern US. They also occur westward throughout Texas and into the southern portions of New Mexico and Arizona. This Eastern Meadowlark was photographed as it lustily proclaimed the onset of spring. The slurred whistle of the Eastern Meadowlark was once a common sound in almost any grassland from Maine to Arizona. Although it is still easy to find in the numerous grassland areas of the midwestern and central US, it has declined in the eastern portions of its range due to habitat destruction. This one was photographed at the King Ranch in Texas, USA. Photo taken with a Nikkor 300mm ED f4.5 lens on Kodachrome 64 film. (Date: December 1979)
