Northern Mockingbird
[Mimus polyglottos]
[Length 10 in. Wingspan 14 in.]
Northern Mockingbirds breed throughout much of the US except the northcentral and northwestern states.
They move slightly south during the winter.
As the name implies, Mockingbirds imitate other birds in their long and varied song, which is often heard at night.
During the day, Mockingbirds usually sing from an exposed perch to keep a close watch on their territory.
They will chase other birds (and often other animals) which "dare" to enter their territory.
This one was photographed in late afternoon light at Brigantine NWR, New Jersey, USA.
Photo taken with a 300mm f4.5 Nikkor ED lens on Kodachrome 64 film.
