Winter 2008 - Time for Christmas COunts!

Erik went to four Texas counts in December (Balmorhea, Fort Davis, Midland, and Robert Lee). Highlights were hundreds of Western and Clark's Grebes with babies at Lake Balmorhea, hundreds of Mountain Bluebirds at Robert Lee, and Neotropic Cormorants at a small park lake in Midland.

Fall 2008 - Local Birding

Erik made the rounds of local birding spots in Andrews County, Texas. The highlights were a rare western occurrence of two juvenile White-rumped Sandpipers, and an amazing 2000+ flock of Long-billed Curlews at Shafter Lake. Over the course of two hours they flew up in small groups of 50 to 100 birds to join other Curlews flying past the lake. The total number of Curlews was at least 2500!

May 2008 - Spring Migration on the Upper Texas Coast

Erik spent two weeks photographing spring migrants at Sabine Woods, High Island, and the Bolivar Peninsula.

March 2008 - More Winter Birding

Erik and Mary travelled to Port Aransas to attend the Whooping Crane Festival.

After the Whooping Crane Festival, Erik and Mary drove all the way back across Texas to Socorro NM to visit Bosque del Apache NWR and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's "Very Large Array" of radio telescopes (made famous by Jodie Foster in the movie Contact). A day trip to the restaurant atop Sandia Crest near Albuquerque netted all three species of Rosy-Finch, including both races of the Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch.

February 2008 - Winter Birding

Erik travelled to Houston to photograph an Allen's Hummingbird and other winter birds at a private residence.

The rest of the week was spent in the Rio Grande Valley, with the incredible highlight of the first North American record of White-crested Elaenia!
