American Pipit
[Anthus rubescens]
[Length 6.5 in. Wingspan 10.5 in.]
The breeding plumaged American Pipit is a brownish gray, sparrow-sized bird with a thin, pointed bill and white outer tail feathers.
It is streaked on the back and breast and has a buffy wash on its underparts.
Close observation reveals that it "walks" rather than "hops", which is useful in separating it from Sparrows and Longspurs.
American Pipits breed throughout Alaska, western and far northern Canada, and in the mountain areas of the western US.
They winter across the southern US states and up the coasts as far north as extreme southern British Columbia in the west and Virginia in the east.
This American Pipit was photographed at the King Ranch in Kingsville, Texas, USA.
Photo taken with a Nikkor 300mm ED f4.5 lens on Ektachrome 200 film.
