[Fratercula arctica] Atlantic Puffins are black and white seabirds instantly recognized by their clown-like faces and brilliantly colored triangular bills. They occur in the north Atlantic and adjacent Arctic waters, northern Scandinavia, and northwestern Russia. In North America they breed in large colonies on islands and rocky headlands in coastal eastern Canada. Normally, a boat ride is required to see one up close, but this one was photographed from the rocks right along the shore of Witless Bay in Newfoundland, Canada. Puffins feed on small fish. During the breeding season, they can be seen flying back to their nesting burrows to feed their young with as many as a dozen fish drooping like an old man's whiskers from the sides of their bills.
