This bird was initially identified as a Clapper Rail. However, the warm reddish-brown edges of the back feathers and orange-tinted breast suggest King Rail, so comments on the ID are welcome.

Ravens are common birds of the foothills and mountains of the western US, southern Canada, and Alaska. They can be told from Crows by their wedge-shaped tail, shaggy throat, and hoarse, croaking calls. Ravens are opportunistic feeders and easily co-exist with man and his garbage.
