Sanderling
[Calidris alba]

[Length 8 in. Wingspan 17 in.]

Sanderlings may be the best known of all the sandpipers. Who has not watched them on beaches running before an incoming wave only to turn immediately and chase the wave as it recedes? This is how they feed, for their prey (sand worms and other invertebrates) must constantly rebuild the entrances to their tunnels with each new wave. During that brief time, they are vulnerable to the Sanderlings. This small group was photographed as they landed on the beach along the central New Jersey coast. Photo taken with a 300mm f4.5 Nikkor ED lens on Kodachrome 64 film. (Date: October 1980)
