Black Scoter
[Melanitta nigra]
[Length 19 in. Wingspan 28 in.]
The male Black Scoter is a sea duck with an all black body, and a bulbous orange bill with a dark tip.
The female is a dull brownish color, with a light throat and cheeks, and a bulbous yellow bill with a dark tip.
Black Scoters breed in western Alaska and eastern Canada.
In winter they move south along the coasts and are found from the Aleutian Islands and the southern coast of Alaska to southern California in the west, and eastern Canada to Florida in the east.
This male Black Scoter was photographed on the beach at Higbee Beach in Cape May, New Jersey.
