Wilson's Snipe
[Gallinago delicata]

[Length 10.5 in. Wingspan 18 in.]

Wilson's Snipe breed across much of Alaska, Canada, and the northern US. They winter along both the east and west coasts, and across the southern states of the US. The Eurasian counterpart of the Wilson's Snipe, the Common Snipe, breeds in the temperate regions of Europe and Asia. The Eurasian "Common Snipe" and the North American "Wilson's Snipe" were originally separate species, but were later lumped together by some authorities. They were officially (re)split back into separate species first by the British Ornithologist's Union (BOU), and then by the American Ornithologist's Union (AOU) in the summer of 2002. This Wilson's Snipe was photographed feeding at the edge of a muddy field on the King Ranch in Texas. Photo taken with a 300mm f4.5 Nikkor ED lens on Kodachrome 64 film. (Date: November 1980)
