Song sparrows are common breeding or wintering birds throughout much of Canada and the US. They are best recognized by their easily-learned song and the heavy streaking on the breast, which usually merges into a dark central spot. The Song Sparrows breeding in the Aleutian Islands are larger and darker than their mainland cousins. Song Sparrows prefer brush and thickets near open grassy areas for feeding.
