Scarlet Tanager
[Piranga olivacea]

[Length 7 in. Wingspan 11.5 in.]

Scarlet Tanagers breed across the northeastern US, and just barely into southern Canada. The males are a brilliant scarlet red with crisp black wings. Females are dull olive drab, which makes them blend into the background when they are sitting on the nest. Males are often heard singing their "Robin with a sore throat" song in the forest, but can be amazingly difficult to see in the treetops, where they tend to forage. This male Scarlet Tanager was photographed at Sabine Woods - TOS, TX. Photo taken with a Nikkor 300mm EDAF-S f4 lens + Nikkor TC20E II 2.0x Teleconverter (EFL=900mm) on a Nikon D100 camera. (Date: April 21, 2006)
