Bay-breasted Warbler
[Setophaga castanea]

[Length 5.5 in. Wingspan 9 in.]

Bay-breasted Warblers breed throughout southeastern and central Canada and along the very northern edge of the US from Maine to Minnesota. They get their name from the rich chestnut or "bay" coloring of the males on the top of the head, and across the throat, upper breast, and sides. This is set off by a black face mask, a buffy "ear patch", and a black back with white wing bars. Females lack the rich head pattern of the males and have only a faint wash of the bay color across the upper breast and sides. This Bay-breasted Warbler was photographed at Brigantine NWR in New Jersey, USA. Photo taken with a Nikkor 300mm f4 EDAF lens on Kodachrome 200 film. (Date: May 1996)
