The Red-headed Woodpecker gets its name from the fact that it looks as if its head were dipped completely in red paint or ink. It breeds in open woodlands and wooded farmlands throughout most of the eastern and central US, just barely spilling over into southcental and southeastern Canada. This one was photographed emerging from a nest cavity near Cape May in southern New Jersey. Photo taken with a Nikkor 300mm f4.5 ED lens on Ektachrome 400 film. (Date: June 1979)
