Great Spotted Woodpeckers are residents across much of northern Europe and Asia. They are basically a black and white woodpecker, but have bright red undertail coverts, unlike any similar woodpeckers in North America. This one was photographed approaching a feeder at a nature center near Nemuro on the island of Hokkaido, Japan. Photo taken with a 300mm f4.0 EDAF lens on Kodachrome 200 film. (Date: January 1996)

The "big brother" of the dainty Downy Woodpecker, the Hairy Woodpecker is less often seen at feeders than its diminutive cousin.
