Northern House Wren - Western
[Troglodytes aedon parkmannii]

[Length 4.75 in. Wingspan 6 in.]

The House Wren breeds across most of the US and southern Canada. The male's explosive song of bubbling notes is unmistakable as he stakes out his territory. The male House Wren builds many nests in any appropriate cavity within his territory in the hopes of attracting a mate. He is pugnacious and will even evict other cavity-nesting birds, such as Chickadees, who have already started nest building. This male "Western" House Wren was photographed as he sang from a low perch in a tree at Devil's Tower National Monument in Wyoming, USA. Photo taken with a Nikkor 300mm f4.5 ED lens on Kodachrome 200 film. (Date: May 1992)
