Black-throated Blue Warblers breed in the northeastern US and along southern Canada and the northern US as far west as Manitoba and Minnesota. The male is unmistakable with his rich blue back and black throat and sides. Females have none of the male's color or pattern, but both share a white spot along the lower edge of the folded wing. This "pocket handkerchief" is also a diagnostic field mark for both males and females in all plumages. This beautiful male was photographed during fall migration at Cape May, New Jersey. Black-throated Gray Warblers breed in the foothills and mountains of western and northwestern US and southwestern British Columbia. But, this one was photographed in a small courtyard where it spent the winter on the Princeton University campus in central New Jersey! Black-throated Green Warblers are common breeding birds of coniferous and mixed woodlands in the northeastern US, and eastern and southcentral Canada. No other eastern warbler has the combination of a yellow face, dark black throat, and black wings with white wing bars. Their loud "ZEEE ZEEE ZEE-ZU-ZEE" song, which is heard in migration and on their breeding grounds, is also one of the easiest to learn.
