Red-bellied Woodpeckers occur in open woodlands, parks, and suburban areas from New England to Minnesota and south to Florida and central Texas. They are common feeder visitors, and are often recognized by their calls, which include a hollow, rolling CHURRR or CHIV-CHIV, long before they are seen. Although the Red-bellied Woodpecker gets its name from the rosy wash on its belly, it is best recognized by its black and white "ladder" back and the large amount of red on the back of the head. In the male the red continues over the top of the head to the base of the bill.
