Ravens are common birds of the foothills and mountains of the western US, southern Canada, and Alaska. They can be told from Crows by their wedge-shaped tail, shaggy throat, and hoarse, croaking calls. Ravens are opportunistic feeders and easily co-exist with man and his garbage. This one was photographed in the Valley of Fire National Monument in Nevada. Photo taken with a 300mm f4.5 Nikkor ED lens on Kodachrome 64 film. (Date: September 1979)
