Spruce Grouse
[Falcipennis canadensis]

[Length 16 in. Wingspan 22 in.]

Spruce Grouse are residents across much of Canada and Alaska, and the boreal forests of the northern US. They are not easy to deliberately find and are usually simply stumbled upon by accident. Indeed, this one was photographed right along a heavily-travelled woodland trail near Anchorage, Alaska after a day spent fruitlessly looking in much more likely places! Photo taken with a 300mm f4.5 Nikkor ED lens on Ektachrome 400 film pushed to 800. (Date: May 1984)
