Limpkin
[Aramus guarauna]

[Length 26 in. Wingspan 40 in.]

Limpkins are primarily found in Florida, but also occur locally in Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana. Their loud, bugling calls sound a little like those of their larger relatives, the Cranes, and are often dubbed into movie soundtracks to lend an air of the "wild night". This one was photographed in the the swamps of the Ocala National Forest north of Orlando, Florida. Photo taken with a 300mm f4.5 Nikkor ED lens on Kodachrome 64 film. (Date: June 1982)

Black-crowned Night-Heron
[Nycticorax nycticorax]

[Length 25 in. Wingspan 44 in.]

As the name implies, Night-Herons are more often seen late in the day as the sun begins to set, when they leave their roosts to hunt during the evening hours. Black-crowned Night-Herons are found throughout most of the US and parts of southern Canada. Herons and Egrets nest in colonies and build nests of sticks in low trees near the water. During the breeding season, adult Black-crowned Night-Herons grow wispy head plumes. This Black-crowned Night-Heron was photographed at Brigantine NWR, New Jersey in the warm glow of a summer sunset. Photo taken with a Nikkor 300mm ED f4.5 lens on Kodachrome 64 film. (Date: May 1982)
