Black-crowned Night-Heron
[Nycticorax nycticorax]

[Length 25 in. Wingspan 44 in.]

As the name implies, Night-Herons are more often seen late in the day as the sun begins to set, when they leave their roosts to hunt during the evening hours. Black-crowned Night-Herons are found throughout most of the US and parts of southern Canada. Herons and Egrets nest in colonies and build nests of sticks in low trees near the water. During the breeding season, adult Black-crowned Night-Herons grow wispy head plumes. This Black-crowned Night-Heron was photographed at Brigantine NWR, New Jersey in the warm glow of a summer sunset. Photo taken with a Nikkor 300mm ED f4.5 lens on Kodachrome 64 film. (Date: May 1982)
